About the Initiative

The Lake Worth Lagoon Initiative (LWLI) is a multiagency and stakeholder based advisory group organized primarily for the purposes of:

  • Coordinate local, state, and federal agencies' activities that affect the Lake Worth Lagoon and associated watershed.
  • Heightening awareness of the Lagoon, its resources, and issues.
  • Carrying out the mission, action plans and projects outlines in the Lake Worth Lagoon Management Plan.
  • Coordinating Lake Worth Lagoon technical conferences.
  • Selecting a sub-committee to rank and recommend proposed projects to receive Lake Worth Lagoon Partnership Grant funds.

The LWLI is led by 5-member Executive Committee which includes:

  • A member of the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) as appointed by the Chair of the BCC.
  • A member of the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board, representing Palm Beach County.
  • The Director of the Southeast District Office of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), or his/her designee.
  • A representative of the Palm Beach County League of Cities (LOC) as appointed by the League.
  • The Director of the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) or his/her designee.

Appropriate members of the Executive Committee identify lead staff to cover major programs including:

  • Water (Lead agency: SFWMD)
  • Habitat (Lead agency: ERM)
  • Pollution Prevention
  • Public Outreach (Lead agency: ERM)
